Mums in Control for Mums who mean business
Interview with three ‘mumpreneurs’ about their child-inspired businesses.
‘After lots of research we opened The Hairforce in June 2006,’ explains Dee Wright, mother and former strategic planner. ‘The number of children with nits has reached epidemic proportions in the UK. The treatment market is worth £30 million annually, but 80% of the time these products simply don’t work – adding to the vicious cycle in which vast numbers of mums find themselves trapped. We provide the first innovative solution to this massive problem, which is the only guaranteed way to eliminate head lice – thereby giving mums the support they deserve.’
The Hairforce is a nit and head lice removal service with a growing team of highly-skilled ‘Lice Assassins,’ who clear for you, taking the pressure off parents and removing the stigma for children. It is all done by hand – no chemicals are used, so it’s safe, natural and environmentally ethical. Whilst they clear, the child is treated like the most important person in the world – comfy in a specialist massage chair and entertained with the latest PSP and Nintendo DS computer games as well as DVDs and magazines.
The Hairforce currently operates from Dee’s on home in London’s Primrose Hill, but she is currently working on plans to franchise the business nationally, providing a powerful employment model that aims to bring women back into the workplace, with truly flexible part-time work that is also socially important. She has gained endorsement from such celebrities such as Jonathan Ross and the late Anita Roddick and gives the following advice to aspiring mumpreneurs, ‘ You need to be passionate about what you want to do and stick with the dream whatever is thrown at you. If you believe in it and in yourself you can achieve anything.’
